Robert knew from the moment he saw Christie that he was his soul mate. Christie has the ability to talk to Caro after she has passed. It is a comfort to him, and it helps Frankie hear her voice, but he doesn't tell anyone about it because he doesn't want them to think he is crazy. Christie doesn't tell Robert about it, but as time goes on, it seems that Robert believes in this stuff a bit as well and eventually it starts talking about pagan rituals and how his family grew up with different beliefs.

They are more compatible than they thought. So far the book was hitting all the great parts for me. Then Christie gets deployed and Robert completely takes over at home. He moves in, takes care of Frankie, and waits for Christie to come home. Then there was some brief cheating-ish type behavior it didn't really go far and it definitely appeared more of a PTSD-not fully realizing what was going on-dealing with death type of situation. That annoyed me a bit although I could potentially understand how it happened. Then the book just felt a bit rushed at the end.

There wasn't a lot of resolution of the cheating-ish incident, and I felt there were definitely unsettled feelings between the guys, even though they said they were fine. It was like the book started out going miles per hour, and then came to a construction zone and slowed down to This book started as a very solid 5 star read for me. It hit a ton of emotions in me, especially as we learned about Caro. Singing to Frankie and Christie's conversations with her made me tear up on numerous occasions. She was beautifully written, and I really loved the start of the book. Christie and Robert connected quickly and strongly and they were great together.

Unfortunately, it didn't finish so strong for me, but it is still a 4 star read for me. See all 7 reviews. Most recent customer reviews. The Soldier and the State - Wikipedia

It was written as a lite bit of entertainment to take the readers minds off of some of their day to day doldrums. I will be looking into other books from this author in the future. I completely enjoyed the story and I am very glad that I bought the book! An avid reader in Rock Tavern, NY. Love at first sight and the trials of war. I was surprised and very pleased to find this novel ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime. There is a soldier and a state trooper at the heart of the story..

This along with wiccan supernatural characters included in the cast make for a very good novel. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Where do I start? As another review said, there is definitely gender confusion. Christie reads very much as a Mary Sue character rather than a man and a soldier, and Robert is nearly the same. He certainly doesn't come across as a strong state trooper. The story and writing are very adolescent, and what it lacks in character development it makes up for in being a schoolgirl's fantasy. It could do with a good punctuation editor, and I found the constant use of 'Christ on a cracker' as an expletive annoying.

If you're a very young adult, you might enjoy this one. With the principal character assigned a female name, I thought I was reading about a woman for the first several pages. Poor writing, silly plot. If you're looking for a novel with believable and reasonably masculine characters, this is not a book for you. I struggled through the first half and then gave up on it. He had helped his best friend Caro and her partner have a daughter, but they were killed in a car crash when the baby was just a couple of months old.

Being the biological father, he got custody. It was a big adjustment for him. As he was rushing to get to base one day, he gets pulled over for speeding. His state trooper was a complete hottie and they eventually met again later and decided to date. Robert knew from the moment he saw Christie that he was his soul mate. They are more compatible than they thought. If I hear or see "christ on a cracker" one more time I might throw something. There is cheating and yes I consider what one of the MC's did cheating.

Then to top it off, said MC expects the other to overlook what happened and allow him to still come around? Yeah, so not happening. Robert told Christie he could be at the Army wedding, but not this one. That was a good compromise, since he didn't have to do that. Did he have any trouble from anyone?

I find it hard to believe that no one messed with him for being openly gay. Overall, I hate to say it, but I didn't care for this: Aug 26, Allybaba rated it liked it. I really liked parts of this and I would have rated it 4 stars but then one of the MCs cheated Now when this occurs in the story, something traumatic has occurred to him as part of his serving overseas, I think this is supposed to be the excuse and compelling event?? Anyway I really liked parts of this and I would have rated it 4 stars but then one of the MCs cheated Anyway this ended up making me mad and made me dislike him.

I felt it was selfish and a copout, especially in light of what he has asked his new boyfriend to take on for him as part of his deployment. All that being said, I would like to see a sequel, there were some plot points that were left hanging and I wanted to see how they ended up building trust after the "temptation" incident. The two MCs had great chemistry and I wanted to see more of them. Jul 22, Kenike rated it really liked it.

I was given a copy of this book for my review.

This is my first time reading this author and this book was very good! It had its filing moments and more serious moments. It was fun, hilarious and a little sad! I really hope there is more. What I didn't like were the unresolved issues between the sisters and the kind of abrupt ending. That's why I hope she writes more. I was so into the characters. Sep 12, Thomas rated it it was amazing. Jan 02, Simone Anderson rated it it was amazing. I loved this book. All of the details - even the painful ones were fantastic.

Jul 19, Maverickgirl31 rated it liked it Shelves: This book was a 2. So I was predisposed to like the blurb and the concept of the story. Christie Collins soldier and Robert Lindstrom trooper meet under inauspicious circumstances…a traffic stop. Robert takes action to find out more about the man of his dreams and works out to ask him out on a date in the least stalker-like fashion.

It does, and yet Christie comes off as immature to me. He frequently admits that he acts like a teenage girl and I agreed. I found that VERY unattractive. I felt the same way about Robert. Why did he become a trooper? What is his background dating-wise? Why is he single? Why is he attracted to Christie? Christie is pretty generally described as being blue eyed with feminine features and Robert as a Nordic giant. Christie is a pretty easy lay so we go from steak and candlelight to hunk a hunka burning love with lightning speed. We only get a taste of 2 and half semi date scenes between the pair…where you get to see them bonding and learning about it each other and the rest is sort of implied.

I thought the circumstances were credible. I felt it was exacerbated, not by his celibacy but by his inability to discuss the situation with anyone. Also, this relationship…for all its intensity is fairly young. Shined shoes do not a deep abiding friendship make! A complete red herring: I also thought this could have been weaved a little more cleanly into the story. It sort of being sprinkled in and then all the revelations at the end were completely unnecessary…and I think contributed to the view by other reviewers and little by myself that the relationship seemed just a little to immature for such a major commitment.

I was between and 3. I really really liked both of these characters and how their story unfolds. This story has a lot in it - some ghosts, some new age, some norse mythology references, a physic aunt, a baby and a huge overwhelming family. But mostly it's about two really likeable MCs. Christie Collins is a gay soldier who fathered his best friend and her partner's baby. The story begins shortly after Carolyn Christie's BFF and her partner have been killed in an auto acci I was between and 3.

The story begins shortly after Carolyn Christie's BFF and her partner have been killed in an auto accident and Christie is alone raising his daughter, Francesca Frankie.

Alaska Military Police Taser Training

He's late to get to the base when he's pulled over by state trouper Robert Lindstrom for speeding. Robert is immediately attracted to Christie - even though he initially mistakes him for a woman based on his name and hearing him crying while he is giving him the ticket. When he realizes Christie is indeed a man, he begins plotting how he can see him again without stalking him. He really thinks Christie is "the one" but he doesn't want to scare him off. Robert plots to see Christie in court for the speeding ticket, but ends up making a dinner date with him and while they have a few bumps in the road, they eventually settle into dating and fall in love.

I would have liked to have a lot more of the details of this part of the story, but my guess is that some editor told Ms. Noel she needed to tighten up read shorten the book and so some of the dating history is told more through a flashback type scenario then actually taking us through the dating. Of course, into every romance, a little drama must fall. So Christie must certainly be sent off to some god-forsaken corner of the world on deployment. And he leaves Robert in charge of Frankie at Christie's house - but not before Robert asks Christie to marry him and Christie says "yes".

She is an amusing character whose voice I pictured as Sandra Bullock's beauty pageant contestant from Miss Congeniality. She appears throughout the story to alternately encourage Christie or kick him in the ass as warranted. Christie's deployment is full of the usual stuff - wait around on edge, bombings and awful consequences of seeing the horrors of war, and a complete lapse of judgment one night after a hellish experience. Christie grows a lot during the story as does Robert. The both come to understand each other more and their love grows even though they spend nearly as much time apart before their wedding as they had spent together before Christie's deployment.

If I could change one thing about the book, I would like to have more of the story of Robert and Christie between their first date and the engagement and deployment. I really felt like that got rushed a bit and I really liked that part of the story with them getting to know each other. I hope we get a really good glimpse of Robert and Christie's life together if they are not the MCs of the next book.
