I just stared back into her black eyes. Malakin was the first to break eye contact as she turned back to the wall.

Placing her hand sideways, she began chanting again. After only a few minutes, a passageway appeared. Something was calling out to me. I just wanted to be at home lying in my nice warm bed wondering what I was going to do today. Being here—on a different planet, getting ready to walk into the dark tunnel to my death—was not what I wanted to be doing. For as long as the item remains, so shall everything else beyond this doorway.
This tunnel shapes itself and its traps to suit the person who enters it. Make no mistake, you are not the first person to enter the tunnel in search of the treasured item. Others have tried and failed. They were probably warriors or something, not just a schoolgirl. There it was again—the pull, something telling me that I just needed to enter the cave. I took a few steps forward. Looking back at Malakin, I saw the slight hint of a smile on her beautiful face. I smiled back and turned toward the tunnel with renewed hope.
She sa id before that the future changes with each decision. At that moment I decided I can do this. Without another thought, I stepped into the darkness of the tunnel. Let me tell You a sad story!

The Golden Staff Saga: The Pillar of Light by Christina Neely
A girl, Elena, is told never to enter the woods around her town, but she feels compelled to anyways. She discovers that the woods are a link to another world that needs her to help save them. This story has a Lord of the Rings feel to it. A journey with different individuals each with their own unique powers in search of magical objects trying to save their world. The dif I received this as a first reads from Goodreads giveaway.
The difference is that Neely is able to give the journey a much younger, lighter feel, but still keep the elements of danger. For a first novel, Neely did a beautiful job of description. The storyline moved along nicely. The characters were likable. I rooted for Elena in the maze. I just wished there was a little more talking among the people in the story.
It sometimes felt like the conversations were cut short, and I didn't understand why Elena didn't ask more questions. You can tell she's a smart, resourceful girl, so she should stop just accepting things.
The ending felt a little abrupt and a little rushed, but I could see why it was a stopping point for the author. The book left me invested in what is going to happen to everyone along their journey, so it did leave me with an interest in reading the next book. I would recommend this to any young reader interested in a good adventure fantasy novel. Apr 19, Billie rated it liked it. This review is based on a free copy I got from the author through Goodreads. Elena has been told not to enter these woods, and in fact there are barriers and signs to that effect.
