If you want to reach a general yet perfectly recounted knowledge of the Ancient times, this is the collection for you. It's obviously less engaging than reading the translation of the myths themselves, but the description of almost every god and godess is worth every minute of the reading.

I particularly loved the description of the nymphs, for some reason they had more pathos and poetry to them than any other description g A small encyclopedia of all the mythical world of the Greeks and Romans. A must have as a reference in any library! Jan 30, Phillip Riley rated it it was amazing. This book is really amazing! If you want a good overview of the mythology, this is a great place to go. Not only is there an overview of lots of major and minor divinities, but also stories, description of temples, rituals, and lots more. Definitely worth the time.

Nov 23, Vivien rated it it was ok Shelves: This was a bit like reading a text book. The first half was a definition of the origins and relationships of the Greek and Roman gods which got more tedious as the gods got more obscure. The second half was the famous legends which were not written with any gusto. May 18, Kathi Olsen rated it liked it Shelves: Interesting stories, but the beginning was a little confusing trying to keep everyone straight.

Felt like I needed to see a pedigree chart. Read it in portions rather than straight through. Very informative, but so dry.

Oct 13, Tsvetina rated it did not like it. Great overview of all the Greek myths and legends. The reason why I like my myths as they are and not through someone's open interpretation or ordering is because the author usually tries to prove his POV with half-infos. So far, this is what Berens is doing He doesn't have to mention what we believe nowadays or actually back in his days and he doesn't have to mention the bible.

But I won't judge the book solely on the intro. This book is just an overview of the myths, very vague. I wouldn't suggest it to serious students. It's very much censu The reason why I like my myths as they are and not through someone's open interpretation or ordering is because the author usually tries to prove his POV with half-infos. It's very much censured, apparently, it was written for school boys a while ago. That bit about Endymion and Selene made me laugh. Sure, she only watched over him as he slept. If you want to get serious, don't read this one. The myths themselves are very fascinating.

Although the book doesn't elaborate on the myths, you will get an overview of the characters and stories. The chronology is in order of appearance or of importance.

Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome by E.M. Berens

Half-way through the book, you'll read about the less interesting gods and then more about their temples, sacrifices, festivals, deities, humans, war, etc. You will read everything from shape shifters, to angry gods, to the many human sacrifices. I like to read the myths from time to time to keep them in mind and remember the details.

Many stories come from these myths, like the sword and the stone comes from mythology, king Midas, and so on.

Interesting how the Romans used to believe that people were accompanied from birth to death with a good genius and a malignant genius. Unlike other books they gave two different perspectives. Instead of just giving the mythology from a Greek perspective Berens incorporated some Roman mythology into the stories as well. Unlike other books this one instead of focusing on one particular section or story of Greek mythology included a large variety. This book told stories from the origins of the Titans and Gods to the creation of humans and the seasons of nature.
